Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum 13 - 1st Korean memorial
First Korean memorial service for Korean hibakusha (survivors) - 1968
Particularly poignant for me, as Jeongsoo's grandmother Park Dolsoon & father Choi Dokeun lived near Hiroshima Station at the time.
Halmoni (grandma) has not really spoken about the day, except to say she remembers the heat searing her back and the winds that followed. Mr Choi was only 5 at the time. She then lost her husband several years later (to liver failure) and was a single mother to 2 boys. Halmoni was not one to wallow in pity, she established a grey market business selling soap and cosmetics after the end of the Korean War back in Busan.
Halmoni has still not registered as a hibakusha with the Korean government - she is a stubborn woman! Perhaps this strength is what has seen her face discrimination as a Korean in Japan, survive Hiroshima and the early passing of her husband.
Jeongsoo remembers Halmoni as a woman who loved buying fabric. She was very clean and was always scrubbing using Japanese or American brand cleaning products! She was such a clean freak that she warned a young Jeongsoo not to eat from street vendors or to share his food with strangers (communal eating is very Korean!).
Halmoni would cook a whole fish and fresh rice for Jeongsoo's lunch and deliver it hot to his classroom each day. Jeongsoo's elementary school teacher at one stage payed him money in exchange for this delicious lunch and Jeongsoo was pleased to pocket extra coins!
As an outsider in this family, I find the Choi family history so rich! I just wish I could transcend the language barrier and ask them to recall their memories.
